The NH House Criminal Justice Committee will soon vote on SB 66 — fetal personhood. SB 66 would include a fetus in the definition of “another” for the purposes of first and second degree murder, manslaughter, negligent homicide, and causing or aiding suicide. SB 66 is unnecessary and inconsistent with current law. If passed SB 66 will have consequences that threaten the rights and health of women in our state.
New Hampshire law already punishes assaults resulting in loss of a pregnancy as felonies. In other states that have adopted “personhood” measures, like SB 66, pregnant women have been punished with involuntary medical treatment, surveillance, and incarceration for “risky” behaviors that are not criminalized for others. And with SB 66’s extremely limited exception, women and their healthcare providers are left particularly vulnerable to criminal prosecution under SB 66.
With your help, we can fight for pregnant women’s rights as full persons. SB 66 could create a legal basis for depriving all pregnant women of their status as full persons under the law and contribute to a nationwide effort to erode women’s reproductive rights under Roe v. Wade.
Our opposition has bombarded Committee Members with hundreds of emails. Let’s show them that we are committed and strong in our opposition to SB 66. We can win this — but we need your help!
